Artist Exposé – Matt Jones

Recommended

Anyone who came to 11/11/11 can’t have failed to notice the huge murals that were on show in the main room – they were the brainchild of Sheffield artist Matt Jones. Having recently completed cover artwork for Planet Terror Records, and with an ongoing commitment to Now Then Magazine, it seemed only fitting to showcase some more of his work on here. The words below aren’t ours, but they’re all you need to know. Scroll down if you just want to see the images…

‘Enigmatic’ is an over-used, hyperbolic term. It is a word that is more often than not applied to tedious, boring arses, or, alternatively, hipsters. But in the case of Mattias Jones, its use is not only legitimate, but fucking mandatory. A stubbornly self-taught artist, he lives and works in Sheffield as a self-employed designer and art director, working out of a sprawling ex-cutlery works that he shares with a damn cool cat, Monster.

Stylistically, Jones’ work has always drawn on geometry and he is heavily influenced by Arabic art and fractals. An avid doodler, he sees patterns everywhere and believes that art should be about reusing what is all around us. Organic forms are very important to him, whether they occur in the natural world or in the shapes that numbers make. Utilising non-representative patterns which have both scientific and mystical meanings, he leaves it up to the viewer to choose what they take from his art. In his own words, he makes ‘non-preachy art’.

Some of his finest design work has been in collaboration with musicians and promoters. He has been associated since the start with Sheffield’s Tinnitus : providers of properly hard dance music, producing offkey designs for offkey people. Recently, he has worked closely with Manchester-based producers Indigo and Synkro, including an eight foot mural for the recent 11/11/11 event at Hendre Hall, and continued collaborations with technically inventive musicians such as Denis Jones and Ascetic.

Both Yorkshire through and through and an internationalist (though he denies that particular fact), a large part of his time is spent as the design man for the monumentally successful, free and independent monthly magazine Now Then. Of particular note are his efforts in securing the services of a different artist for each issue, with a number of their artworks featured, along with an interview and a full colour centrefold. Think Razzle, but with a focus on promoting the finest art, artists and makers, as opposed to gynaecological photography.

The next year of work shows Jones collaborating with scientists, mathematicians and engineers on a range of forward-thinking, innovative projects. From that nugget of information, you should be able to infer that Jones is not an artist of the bullshit, wanky contemporary school. Rather, he is a brutally honest, creatively inspired technician and maker of things that look amazing; a pure artisan through and through, even if he does have a suspiciously well cultivated fringe…

For more information or to get in touch with Matt, there’s his Facebook and Twitter.
